Philips Respironics System One Remstar Auto A-Flex

(Continues from my previous review of the ResMed AutoSet S9 APAP sleep device)

I bought the Philips Respironics System One Remstar Auto A-Flex for AU$1995 and H2 Humidifier for AU$430. In the US you can get them both for less than US$625 from Amazon.

Philips Norelco 7340XL cordless razor

I have used Philips (Norelco in North America) shavers for most of my life, except when I flirted with a Braun briefly because its proximity recharging unit intrigued me. But we won’t go there. I try to buy my electric shavers in the US because they are a lot cheaper there than in Australia. For example, the high-end Arcitec models cost nearly AU$500!

ResMed AutoSet S9 APAP sleep device

I borrowed a ResMed AutoSet S9 Automatic Positive Airway Pressure (APAP) device for about 20 days from my pharmacy after having borrowed a Philips Respironics System One for a similar period prior to buying one.

magicJack VoIP

MagicJack is a VoIP telephone device that you plug into one of your computer’s USB jacks. It gives you unlimited phone calls for one flat annual fee and cheap international calls at a good, per-minute price. I bought one for $39.99 at Best Buy in Orlando but it’s the same price elsewhere in the US. They have been around for at least two years now.magicJack

Installation

magicJack works on Intel Apple Mac, Windows XP, Vista, and 7 PCs, provided that no policy restrictions have been placed on your account (as in corporate environments). It was meant to have Linux support in the first quarter of 2010, but that period has passed.

Microsoft Office 2010 Professional

Office 2010 box shot

Microsoft Office is a suite of business programs such as its word processor: Word; spreadsheet: Excel; presentation manager: PowerPoint; email manager: Outlook; database: Access; and so on. This is my review of the main modules of Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus.

Installation

I was on a Microsoft beta program, so I received an invitation to download the Office 2010 Pro Plus edition, which is only sold to volume licensees. For this wider audience, I will focus on the consumer applications you get with the retail edition (Office 2010 Professional).

I downloaded the software and applied the product key, which has two activations. I upgraded my copy of Office 2007 (rather than doing a clean installation, which is preferred). I didn’t want to go through the hassle of exporting the Outlook email accounts. No problems noted, phew!

Zune 8

Zune 8 GBThanks to good friends in the Microsoft Windows group in Redmond, I received a shiny new, red 8 GB Zune at CES personalised at the back.

Package

The compact packaging of the 4/8 GB Zune does not contain a software CD like the original Zune. You get a manual, a USB cable and a set of earphones. The box comes in a soft pouch and could be mistaken for a perfume box.

Setting Up

You first set up the Zune software on the PC by going to www.zune.net/setup. You get to choose between the “full Zune experience” and simply downloading the software. I already had the latest software on account of my old Zune, so I explored the Zune.net site and noticed ZuneOriginals.net. This site apparently lets you customise your Zune.

This is where the typical Zune customer who dares to leave the 50 states gets a rude shock. Keep reading…

Zune 30

Microsoft released the Zune player earlier in 2007 (only in the United States). This is the first such device I have managed to keep from my teenage son, so I got to know it quite well. I have not owned or used an Apple iPod, so you won’t see any comparisons here. This is just about the Zune.

What is the Zune? It is a portable picture viewer, video and music player, as well as a radio. It is about the size and weight of a pack of cards. It has a 3×2-inch (320×240 pixels) colour screen and a 30 GB hard drive. Its circular control wheel is really a 4-way switch and the centre is a push-button. There are two smaller Back and Play/Pause buttons. At the base there is a docking socket and at the top is an earphone socket and a locking switch. The only accessories that you get are the earphone and a USB connector.
